In 1661, renowned interpreter of Shakespeare’s heroines, actor Edward Kynaston is the toast of the town. His interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragic ladies has audiences cheering his name, especially his Desdemona and his famous “death scene”. However, after word spreads of the first actress taking to the stage, Charles II decrees that women, including his own mistress Nell Gwynn, can perform, and that all female roles from then on must be played by women. After losing his fame, his secret lover the Duke of Buckingham, and fi nally his pride, Kynaston must adapt to this strange new world and fi nd his place in society.
